Set yourself up for success on Forte

You’ve signed up for online music lessons, and you’re excited to start learning on Forte! We want to make sure you are ready to go when you log on for your first lesson. Here are five simple steps you should take to make sure you’re set up for success:

1. Make sure you have a strong, stable internet connection.

2. Use your computer.

We know that it may seem easier to use your phone or your iPad, but Forte works best using the Google Chrome web browser on a laptop or desktop.

3. Get some headphones.

They don’t have to be fancy! Even with Forte’s noise suppression, headphones help focus sound and attention. Forte teachers like Sony Monitoring headphones, but what you already have will work too. Open ear headphones are also popular and help alleviate the closed-off feel of traditional headphones. We do not recommend Bluetooth headphones unless you have no other option. If you must use Bluetooth headphones, use the mic from your computer, not the mic on the headphones. (Also, depending on your instrument, AirPods/earbuds may be uncomfortable.)

4. Invest in a microphone.

We highly recommend using an external mic for online music lessons. You can read our case for external mics and browse our recommendations here. There is a mic to fit any budget. For the most basic, most affordable recommendation, choose the Fifine K669.

5. Do a trial run!

Log in to Forte test your audio and video. Before you enter your teacher’s studio, you will see a green button that says “Camera & Audio Settings.” Click on it to test your mic, camera angles, speakers, and screen sharing.

Now you’re ready for your first online music lesson. See you in the Forte studio!
